King Arthur has always been the primordial template for the fantasy worlds we create. The land of myth and legend birthed stories of chivalrous knights and comely maidens, mysterious wizards and rumors of dragons. The world is the crucible of our ancient imaginations, and the first seeds that grew into the modern fantasy realms we play in today, through the romance writers of the 12th century to Victorian poems about the Lady of Shallot. It’s also underpinned by elusive facts and a half-forgotten history, a seam of truth about our past that, if unearthed, will change the way we see our future.

History and Fantasy Collide

Avalon: The Game will be a celebration of all the diverse threads of history and fantasy that have come together to construct the world of Camelot. There will be two simultaneous lores, one based on the myth of King Arthur blended with the modern fantasy staples of dragons, orcs, and elves, with a story from renowned fantasy writer Jason Sloane. Alongside it will be the story of the Knights Templar, how they arrived in Scotland — the starting hub for the players — and their expansion to the Kingdom of Portugal. These fragments of history have been put together by Freddie Silva, a famous historian of Arthurian lore.

King Arthur still sits on the throne of Camelot, but his ear is poisoned daily by the mysterious Inquisitor who has come from Rome to denounce the ancient magic of the Druids. The druids are then cast out by the King, whose heart is tainted with the whisperings of new religions. The Druids, aggrieved, scared, and on the run in the forests, open portals to different dimensions, and in doing so bring the sundering orcs and highborn elves to the land — a land already inhabited by Vikings from the north and Knights Templar from the continent. Gamers can play as all these races, as well as simply being a humble human who aspires to rub shoulders, in friendship and in warfare, with these fabled creatures.

The Realms of Avalon, Owned by the Players

The dimensions that the druids create become paths to the many realms of Avalon, each with a different flavor. The realms of Avalon are not just a different coat of paint, but entirely different worlds with different activities and gameplay styles for the player to enjoy. In the Druid’s dream dimension, for example, peace reigns eternally. No combat or friction between either the players or NPCs in the world will occur. It is a place for hunting, fishing, reading books, meditating, and delving deep into the ancient lore of Avalon and the nexus of dimensions that are pathing through it. Other dimensions will be scorched wastelands inhabited by eldritch phantoms and the site of bloody PvP battles and fierce competition over loot.

Through these actions, they will become the fibre that holds the story of the game together, and when battle-weary raiders come back from the latest story event, they will rest at inns owned by the players, each providing a different atmosphere. A truly living, breathing world, where new gameplay experiences can be discovered on the blockchain, because it means the players truly own the value they create by participating in the game. Value that is accurately transferable, both within the world of Avalon and indeed the Metaverse beyond.
