Avalon Reimagined: Part II
In our previous article, we discussed the history behind King Arthur’s kingdom and the integral part it plays in Avalon’s storyline. In this section, we talk about how following the storyline in playing Avalon will speed up your progress through the game.
Power Up By Playing the Story
To progress, level up, and participate, players are heavily encouraged to play through the story, as it offers the fastest route forward through the game. The Knights Templar, drawn by tales that the druids hold the secret to a gift of extraordinary power, have arrived in this moment of strife and chaos in the land to find the keys to that power. The Inquisitor, troubled by the arrival of this zealous contingent to Avalon’s shore, and fearful of what they could be looking for, is keeping close tabs on their activities, perhaps seeking to direct the King’s wrath upon them should they stray too close to weaponizing whatever secret the Druid’s hold.
Players are under no obligation to play through the story, however. Players can simply spend their time as travelers and workers in this world, and not participate with the broiling strife that is just over the horizon. They may find, however, that the wider story seeps into the world, and it changes as players advance the story. One key way this will happen is the first player to discover druidic runes in an area will open it up to the ‘general playerbase’ for everyone to explore. New pastures of land may exist behind copses of wood that farmers can begin to colonize and use to plant their crops. New dungeons will creak up and offer their hoard to those brave enough to venture inside.
Yet to experience Avalon’s high-powered premier content — the Raids — and to be in with a chance of winning the sponsored loot, in-game NFTs and token drops that will elevate heroes to the highest echelons of Avalon society, players must complete the story and the storyline quests. These quests will expand upon the fantasy and historical lore-lines that run through the game, blending them together in high drama; the 5 and 6 man raids that make up Avalon’s core, and prestigious content that will be the finales of storylines that have taken the players through the game to that point.
The Raids of Avalon
The 5 and 6 man raids are akin to a mix of Destiny in terms of structure and Assassin’s Creed and Zelda in terms of the players’ movement. It will not be the more prosaic, World of Warcraft-type raid, where 40 guild-members mindlessly hammer, fire blast, and flash heal on server-mute while the tank screams for help. Avalon’s Raids will require coordinated teams who enjoy talking, playing, collaborating, and strategizing together, and who enjoy fast-paced and skillful Action-RPG combat. Strong players will be able to easily help their lower-level comrades through the system that allows the share and swap of equipment, and exists when raiding together. The raids encourage team building and act as a fun, shared activity. It is in raiding where player classes will truly come to the fore as well.
Whether it’s playing a sea-clan Viking tank, an elf with their ornate bow, or a druid whispering prayers of benediction to the land for its healing, the different classes will provide each player with a clear role in the team and a good mix is essential to complete Avalon’s toughest raids.
The raids are meant to serve as a proving ground for competitive loot-seeking teams to win the greatest prizes Avalon has to offer. Stories of the most skillful, industrious, and wealthy players will be easily told by their appearance in the game. Not everyone will fly a dragon. In fact, most players might only get to see them. And when they do, they should pay respect to its rider, as their deeds are doubtless as legendary as King Arthur himself.
Tales of Myth and Legend in Avalon
Avalon is an ambitious mix of fantasy and history coming together, just like in the real legend of King Arthur, to provide a dual-lore background for their epic triple-A MMO. The story will vault out of this twin-heritage lore, bridging the gap between the stories of our past and the fantasies of our future.
